Good morning!
Ah - I see how You do it - to and fro! That's a good idea, even if it lasts double the time to hike the whole trail. But no one says, You have to finish it in a short time! Main thing is to be on one's trail.

Shetland ponies are very good for children! Some years ago I saw a 20 year old stallion with a 10 year old girl - that little guy jumped like a rubberball - charming! She also made Reiterpass with the pony. His name was Bauxi! *ggg*

Hi Eli,
When I have finished the 404, I will in fact have walked it twice. I have unfortunately not been able to make use of public transport, which is great in Wien, but you are right, is often not so great in NÖ. For each stage of the 404 I drive to my chosen starting point, usually the beginning (or the end) of the route I want to walk, but sometimes somewhere in the middle, and then simply walk the chosen route, and then back again, just as you did in your tour "Von Hainfeld zum Kreuzwirt (und zurück)."
My daughter has been riding most of the time at a stable in Höllern, near Rohrau, as they have quite a few Shetland ponies, and their small size matches hers! We are going to Scotland in August and will visit the Shetland Islands, so she can see then in their Heimat. We also chose this stable as my wife comes from a village not so far away (Wolfsthal), so it is easy to drive there and back, as we are at Wolfsthal most weekends.

Hi Peter, nice to read that You were on 404 again! And that You had dry ground and not so much mud as I had. Yes it was very hot that last weekend, also in Carinthia. Thank God we had no thunderstorm - but that crash of the little airplane about 200 m from our competition ground. We were very lucky - no part of it hit anyone of us.
Yes, the timekeeping worked well - esp. the italians got great eyes seeing what we have! Also the judges were pleased. Unfortunatly I got a problem with my stomach in the night from Saturday to Sunday. Journey home on Sunday was heavy. By now its almost ok, I'm only a little bit tired.
Where does Your daughter learn to ride? Good luck for Reiterpass! And for You for Your next stage of 404! How did You get home from Unterhöhenberg? Public transport is kind of "hard going" in Lower Austria, esp. on Saturday/Sunday.

Just a quick note to report that I did the next stage of the 404 (Hainfeld - Kirchberg - Unterhöhenberg) as planned on June 11 (pictures now uploaded to Panoramio). Knowing it would be very hot that day, I got an early start, and managed to get to the Hainfelder Hütte before it got too warm. A good part of the route was pleasant to walk as it was shaded by trees (which is nice when the temperature is over 30°). I expected the route might be muddy (as you experienced the week before) but thankfully the trail was almost everywhere dry and well maintained.
I had a look at your web site and showed it to my daughter, now 11, who has has been learning to ride for the last two years. She hopes to get her Reiterpass next year.
Hope your VBA time keeping program was a great success!

Ey - so we are in similar professions - I work as a DB programmer (VBA)! In the last weeks I worked on a time keeping programm, which will be used this weekend in carinthia at the national championships in endurance riding.
This is why I cannot go hiking this weekend (but because of the heat, too).
In Waldviertel there a many short WW trails, not only Kamptal (which I made many years ago, too) and Thayatal. The most of them can be made in 3 or 4 days.
LG Eli (if You are interested: www.ebr.co.at, in german of course, but it seems, You understand german?)

Güt übersetzt!
DBA = Data Base Administrator
Thanks for the tip - I will have a look at your (06) post.
I have not decided what to try once I have finished the 404, but as I drive to the starting point of each day's hike from Vienna, I would like to keep my "commute time" to not much more than an hour.
I enjoyed the Kamptal WW several years ago, and have thought about doing the Thayatal WW as well. Even at that time the trail markings were of mixed quality (often thanks to the ÖBF), which is I guess understandable, as there are so few hikers using these trails. Thankfully I now have a digital map of NÖ and can print out my own hiking maps.

So hardcore is der nicht - der wandert!! Hiking = wandern, nicht biken! *ggg*

Hi Peter,
Nice to read about where You were/are hiking in this region! Did You also read my last postings about Mariazeller Weg 06 from south of Vienna to Kaumberg? I hiked on the 404 many years ago, a part of it even with crosscountry skies (in winter of course)!
What is or what does a DBA?
Yours, Eli

I enjoyed reading about your hike. I did very much the same on Apr 30 this year (Hainfeld to above Hasenort). A previous hike came to the same spot (via Kreuzwirt) from the other direction, all part of a multi-year hike of the Wanderweg 404 (from Wien).
I also "lost" my way a couple of times, thanks to some very faded markings (e.g. just before Klein-Grill) and not paying enough attention, and at one point had to crawl under some barbed wire that a friendly farmer had put across the trail.
I enjoyed your pictures - I sat under the same tree by Größ-Grill and had a short snack. Some of my pictures can be seen in Panoramio (see link). On my way back from above Hasenort, a deer and I looked at each other for a few minutes until I moved and scared it away.
It is a small world - I used to be a DBA for the United Nations in Wien.
In a few days I plan to continue my hike: Hainfeld - Kirchberg - Unterhöhenberg.
